Fontana Trailers: Trusted Trailer Rentals

Truck size

We recommend a 3/4-ton truck or larger for most of our trailers. If you are not sure your truck can pull one, look up your vehicle maker's towing capacity. If your truck is not rated to tow, a rental company such as Enterprise Truck Rentals rents newer pickups at fair prices, already set up with a tow package and 7-pin connector. Many rental trucks from other companies either cannot tow or are not allowed to.

Tow package

Plan on a Class IV hitch, or a tow setup rated for the full loaded weight (Gross Vehicle Weight). Tongue weight usually runs 10% to 15% of the trailer plus its load. Never tow from a ball bolted straight to the rear bumper; it is not safe.

Ball size

Our trailers use a 2 5/16″ ball. If you need one, we rent a ball and mount rated to 15,000 lb for a one-time $10 fee.

Light plug

You need a 7-pin round connector, commonly called the 7-pin RV plug (six outer pins and one center pin). We do not rent 4-pin adapters, because a 4-pin setup leaves you with no trailer brakes.

Brake controller

Your tow vehicle needs a brake controller. Without one you have no trailer brakes, which is not safe. If your vehicle does not have a controller, ask us about renting a wireless Bluetooth brake controller.

• Trailer number, or the size and type you want
• Pickup date and time
• How long you need it
• A valid California license or proof of California residency

No California license or proof of residency? You can either add Fontana Trailers as an additional insured on a certificate of insurance, or leave a $1,000 deposit.

Once we have your details, we email a DocuSign contract to sign along with a payment link. Reservations must be signed and paid within 24 hours or they are released, and nothing is held until it is signed and paid in full.

License

Every renter needs a valid driver license from the state where they pick up the trailer. We do not accept ID cards in place of a license. With an out-of-state license, you either leave a $2,000 deposit on top of your rental fees or show proof of rental insurance for the trailer.

Special license

Renting a trailer rated 10,000 lb GVWR or more, such as a gooseneck? You will need to show a valid Class A CDL.

Age

Every renter and driver must be at least 18 years old.

You do not have to show proof of insurance. Every rental includes a damage waiver.

What is a damage waiver?

It is a 10% fee added to your rental. If something damages the trailer, you or your insurer only cover the first $1,000.

Can I decline the damage waiver?

Yes, but only if you give us a certificate of insurance (COI) from your insurer that names Fontana Trailers and the trailer's VIN as an additional insured.

Will my own insurance cover a trailer rental?

The only way to know for sure is to ask your insurance company directly. Either way, we still need a COI.

Where we deliver

We deliver or pick up the empty trailer anywhere in the United States.

Cost

Delivery inside California is $3.50 per mile while our driver is towing the trailer, with a $200 minimum per trip. For delivery outside California, call our office for a quote.

Identity (corporations exempt)

Email us a copy of your driver license. We do not accept ID cards in place of a license. With an out-of-state license, include a second document showing your current address, such as an insurance card or a government billing statement.

Receiving a delivered trailer

Someone with a valid driver license has to meet our driver at delivery. If that person is not the name on the contract, our driver will photograph their license. Whoever receives the trailer completes the inspection form and confirms receipt.

Returning a trailer

If our driver collects the trailer at the end of your rental, we recommend someone be there to check its condition. If no one is present at pickup, a Fontana Trailers rep may contact you about any damage.

You can take a trailer out of state, but it has to come back to our Fontana, CA location. Trailers must stay within the United States; we do not allow them into Mexico or Canada.

Need more time? Let us know at least 24 hours ahead. Full payment is due when you extend the rental period, and any late payment is subject to a 35% late fee.

One bedroom

About a 16 ft by 8.5 ft moving trailer.

Two bedrooms

Around 16 to 20 ft by 8.5 ft.

Three bedrooms

Around 20 to 24 ft by 8.5 ft.

Four bedrooms

Around 24 to 28 ft by 8.5 ft.

Five bedrooms

About 28 ft by 8.5 ft.

Usually not. Moving these trailers runs $3.50 per mile, so one-way is generally limited to corporate clients on long-term rentals.

Credit card

We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express, and we are authorized to take government travel charge cards (GTCC). The name on the card must match the name on your driver license.

Cash

Paying cash on a short-term rental means a $500 cash deposit. Longer rentals require a credit card.

Long-term rentals

For rentals of 30 days or more, we may hold a deposit until the trailer is returned. Large companies are usually exempt.

Deposit

In-state rentals need a $200 refundable deposit, and out-of-state trips need a $500 refundable deposit. Fontana Trailers may set a different deposit on any rental if we see risk, suspicion, or a pattern of delinquency or trailer abuse from past rentals.

Cancel at least 72 hours before your reservation starts for a full 100% refund and to void the rental contract.
